Who Art In Utah
History of the
Zion National Chapter SDC

After moving to St George, Utah in October of 2004 I began receiving calls and mail regarding the posibilities of my beginning a chapter of the SDC in the Southern Utah area. I was very busy for my first year and never had time to consider the matter. However, after November, 2005 I was able to lighten my load considerably and reduce involvement in the Tumbleweeds Chapter SDC in Las Vegas, Nevada, and really gave it some serious thought.
Right after the new year of 2006 I got on the phone and called Studebaker lovers and drivers within 50 miles of the immediate area. Receiving much enthusiasm at the idea I put the plan into motion. I had no idea there were so many Studebaker drivers with no local chapter affiliation. I got names and addresses, put together a web site, printed business cards, contacted National SDC for sanctioning, and the rest is HISTORY!
There will be more History in the years to come.

The ZION NATIONAL CHAPTER SDC is now official as certification documents arrived from the office of Leigh Morris, Director of Chapter Chartering, National SDC. He also called me for absolute confirmation and welcomed us as the youngest SDC Chapter. We will remain so until another chapter comes into existance.

The ZION NATIONAL CHAPTER finally got its Official Document - signed, sealed, and delivered - telling the world we are an Official Chapter of the SDC. It will immediately be put in a frame and hung on the wall for all to see. Especially Eleanor Rigby.

HISTORY UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2, 2006
The ZION NATIONAL CHAPTER had its first official outing/meeting at the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlour in downtown St George last night, November 1, 2006. Seven members were in attendance: Gary Walters (president) - Inez Brunson (secretary) - Mike Kelly (treasurer) - Bo & Terri Boisvert (from Pahrump) - Erv & Marge Judd (from Bunkerville). Everyone had a wonderful time and some very decadent ice cream goodies. Thanks to All!

HISTORY UPDATE - MARCH 10, 2007
The first stone was overturned on the way towards making our first annual "FALL FUN FEST" Studebaker Car Show & Meet a reality. I've been having negociations with Michele of the Virgin River, Casa Blanca and Oasis properties in Mesquite, Nevada. I'm going to Mesquite on Saturday, March 17, to meet with her and go over many of the details as well as get a bead on the many options available, and which one would be better for us. I'll let you know after I meet with her as I'll have (hopefully) much more information. gw

HISTORY UPDATE - MARCH 16, 2007
Got notice from Dennis & Adelmarie Murphy that they would like their membership dues back and they want to resign their membership from the Zion National Chapter. I am putting their check for $50 in the mail to them today. Sorry to see them go but I wish them well. gw

HISTORY UPDATE - May 7, 2007
Signed contract with the Virgin River Hotel & Casino to host the Zion National Chapters first "FALL FUN FEST" Studebaker Car Show & Meet to be held the last weekend in September. The dates will be Thursday, Sept 27 to Saturday, Sept 29, 2007 at the Virgin River Hotel & Casino in Mesquite, Nevada. gw

HISTORY UPDATE - May 16, 2007
Attended a membership meeting of the Tumbleweeds Chapter in Las Vegas. A Segment of the meeting included them issuing a check for $336 to include 28 Tumbleweeds Members as members of the Zion National Chapter as well. The dual membership is in lieu of an outright grant to our chapter to help put a few dollars in our bank account. This money is sure to help us with the upcoming "FUN FALL FEST" Studebaker Car Show & Meet. Our sincere grattitude for the show of graciousness by the members of our sister Chapter in Nevada. They have also pledged their assistance in numbers to help with meet chores or just by their physical attendance. Once again we are very gratefull to our brothers and sisters across the state line. Many Thanks!....gw

HISTORY UPDATE - September 30, 2007
"FALL FUN FEST" (9-27 to 9-29) ended last night and was a huge success. We only had 19 Studebakers for display and show, but 55 happy Studebaker lovers signed up for a wonderful weekend. I must admit that I was nervous about the turn-out with entries coming in so slowly, but all's well that ends well, and it ended very well. There were 47 hungry folks at the banquet last night. Our guest speaker was Bill Oliver of Studebaker Parts & Service in Long Beach, California, who, by the way, won the 50/50 Raffle for $108. Winners of the Poker Run were Ralph Perry of Payson, AZ (1st for $57), and Paul Harvey of Savannah, TN, (2nd for $30). Every raffle prize disappeared which was wonderful. The Hospitality Room was a huge success as people congregated to share wonderful Studebaker stories and in general, enjoyed each others company. It was a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. All agreed they would like to have the same show at the same time next year. I'm on it!
My thanks to all that attended and especially to those who put forth their time to help with all the chores that needed taking care of. Inez Brunson and Julie Miller in the Hospitality Room, Ralph and Marji Perry along with Paul & Mary Harvey were busy selling raffle tickets, and especially to Fred & Erika Ball who took great care of the registrations and sold T-Shirts as well. What a spectacular job they did indeed. A special thanks to Erv & Marge Judd who put together our Poker Run, which turned out to be tons of fun and a huge success. I'm already looking forward to next years meet. Hopefully there will be lots more people and cars as well.
By the way, the club made over $1,000 for the bank account to help pay for expenses over the next year. What a great and unexpected surprise that was! Thanks to everybody!!!........gw
